Gels in Conservation Workshop 2024

The CSMVS Art Conservation Department at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai is delighted to announce an upcoming capacity building workshop on Gels in Conservation. This workshop is designed purely for practicing conservators, conservation apprentices and conservation students expanding their knowledge and skills in the innovative use of gels in art conservation. Gels have increasingly become vital tools in the conservation of cultural heritage. As a relatively new class of material in conservation, gels offer numerous applications that enhance the safety by reducing exposure to solvents and effectiveness of conservation treatments. Their use also aligns with art conservation’s commitment to the green movement.

This comprehensive workshop will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of gels, including their chemistry, mechanisms, and application methodologies.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in preparing various types of gels, understanding their additives, and their application. The workshop will also feature case studies, allowing attendees to learn from practical examples.

The objective of this workshop is to equip participants with an understanding of gels’ chemical properties and practical applications in conservation. By the end of the workshop, participants will have the skills to prepare gels, with and without additives and apply them to surfaces.
