Nalanda and the Indian Roots of Tibetan Buddhism
April 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

“Nalanda and the Indian Roots of Tibetan Buddhism” examines the legacy of Nalanda, the world’s first great university, where scholars produced extensive works in philosophy, logic, medicine, and the arts. The institution’s profound tradition of rigorous study not only shaped the educational landscape in ancient South and Southeast Asia but also laid the groundwork for the emergence of modern universities in Europe.
The film, directed and narrated by the Benoy K Behl, captures this rich heritage through extensive footage shot in regions such as Tibet, Kalmykia, Ladakh, Spiti, Arunachal Pradesh, Nalanda, Bodhgaya, Sarnath, and Karnataka. Incorporating reflections from H. H. the Dalai Lama, the film underscores the enduring influence of Nalanda’s scholarly legacy and its pivotal role in preserving knowledge through centuries. This lecture offers an in-depth exploration of how the intellectual traditions of Nalanda continue to inspire contemporary cultural and educational practices.
