The Museum organises lectures and presentations by noted scholars, academicians and authors on a regular basis on a range of subjects from art, art history, archaeology, architecture, heritage, environment and many more.

The Museum also organises 9 major annual lecture series and cultural programmes

The Karl J. Khandalavala Memorial lecture

This prestigious annual memorial lecture was instituted by CSMVS and the Museum Society of Mumbai in the year 1998 in the memory of Late Karl J. Khandalavala, renowned art historian finest scholar of Indian art and former chairman of the Board of Trustees of CSMVS.

The Coomaraswamy Memorial lecture

This prestigious annual memorial lecture was instituted by CSMVS and the Museum Society of Mumbai in the year 1979 in the memory of Late Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy, pioneering historian and philosopher of Indian art.

The Vimal Shah Memorial Lecture

This annual memorial lecture was instituted by CSMVS and the Museum Society of Mumbai in the year 2014 in memory of Late Mrs. Vimal Shah, noted journalist and editor and former member of the Board of Trustees of CSMVS.

Annual Dr. Devangana Desai Endowment Lecture

Dr. Devangana Desai Endowment Programme was instituted at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in 2017 by eminent art historian of ancient and medieval Indian art; Dr. Devangana Desai. This endowment aims at the propagation of research and dissemination of study of ancient, medieval and pre modern (until 1900s) art, archaeology, architecture, culture and history of India. The Annual Dr. Devangana Desai Endowment Lecture aims at dissemination of scholarly research in Indian Art, Architecture, Archaeology, History and Culture (pre-modern).

South East Asia Initiative

India has shared a long history with Southeast Asia through trade, and cultural and political exchanges. To broaden the scope of CSMVS’ interaction with this neighbouring region and strengthen ties with cultural institutions, the Museum has decided to launch its Southeast Asia Initiative. Through this programme, the Museum will invite annually, a scholar from a Southeast Asian country to present an illustrated talk at the CSMVS, thereby offering the people an insight into the culture of their neighbouring countries and the latest in the research being undertaken.

The Jehangir and Shirin Sabavala Memorial Lecture

This lecture is organised in collaboration with The Sabavala Memorial Foundation. The memorial lecture began in 2012 in memory of late artist Jehangir Sabavala and was renamed to Jehangir and Shirin Sabavala Memorial Lecture in 2017.

The Jehangir Nicholson Memorial Lecture

This annual lecture is organised in collaboration with the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation.

Cultural Programmes

The Museum organises cultural programmes as part of its annual event calendar. Two major events amongst these are –

Baadarwa Barsan Ko Aye

This annual musical concert on monsoon melodies began in 2009 with the aim to promote upcoming artists of Indian Classical Music. This programme is in collaboration with the Museum Society of Mumbai.

The Dr. Fredie A. Mehta and Mrs. Keti F. Mehta Memorial Programme

In 2016, the Trustees of the CSMVS and the Museum Society of Mumbai initiated a programme in memory of Dr. Fredie Mehta who was the husband of Ms. Keti F. Mehta, former member of the Board of Trustees of the CSMVS.

Workshops

The Museum organises workshops on art and crafts for adults. You get to meet traditional craftsmen for far-flung parts of the country and make your own art work as you learn about the various traditional arts of India.

Paramparik Karigar Art and Craft Workshops

CSMVS in collaboration with Paramparik Karigar organises a series of workshops on various traditional Indian arts and crafts conducted by Master Craftsmen.

Art360˚ Series

Art360˚ is a series of art workshops conducted by renowned artists and is designed especially for adults. These workshops are held on a Saturday every month.
