Description

Baluchar is the traditional brocaded silk sari from Bengal which got its name from the small village Baluchar near Murshidabad where it originated. These saris are woven on traditional drawlooms with pure mulberry silk yarns. Balucharis have an elaborate narrative depiction on pallus and borders. The pallus are distinguished by large mango-shaped kalka motifs at the centre. On all four sides of the central panel are arranged figural motifs. Human figures are generally depicted in an architectural setting. Baluchar saris often had depictions based on mythological, epic and contemporary themes

This typical example of traditional Baluchar sari, depicts the contemporary scene of a steam engine and train with European passengers on it's pallu, a novelty at that time. The ground has the mango motifs all over.
