Phryne at Eleusis
Description
The wealthy and exquisitely beautiful courtesan, Phryne, lets her hair down as she prepares to enter the sea during the festival of Eleusinian Mysteries in ancient Greece. This artwork is a replica created by Emmanuel Oberhauser, based on a renowned and sizable painting titled Phryne at Poseidonia in Eleusis by the well-known Polish artist, Henryk Hektor Siemiradzki (1843–1902). Siemiradzki’s original painting was acquired by the Russian Emperor Alexander III in 1889 and is currently housed in the collection of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
