Plaster cast of a bust of Buddha
Description
In 1906, even before the building was constructed, the museum acquired its first object – a plaster cast head of Buddha made by John Lockwood Kipling. John Lockwood Kipling was a British artist who spent most of his working life in India. In 1865, he was appointed as a professor in the J. J. School of Arts, Bombay (now Mumbai), and later became its principal. During 1870–1872, Kipling was commissioned by the government to tour the North-west Frontier (Punjab) and Kashmir to make a series of sketches and paintings of Indian craftsmen as well as various sites and antiquities in these regions. The present plaster cast was perhaps done by Kipling during this tour.
