Description

St. Roch has been evoked since the 14th century against the plague, leprosy and cholera that periodically raged throughout Portugal, particularly in Lisbon, where his cult gained a large following. From that city the devotion spread to the overseas territories under Portuguese jurisdiction. He is usually depicted as a pilgrim.
