The Nalvar, the “Four Revered Ones”
Description
Amongst the 63 Nayanars a group of four revered ones are also popularly depicted. Here from right to left, identified by Tamil inscriptions are: Sambandar and Appar ( 7th century), Sundarar (8th century) and Manakancharar (9th century). They are depicted paying homage to a miniature temple enshrining the image of Shiva Nataraja and Shivakami Sundari.
कुल ६३ नायनारों में से चार नायनारों को तमिल भक्ति आंदोलन में विशिष्ट स्थान प्राप्त है। ७ वीं और ९ वीं सदी के बीच चले इस भक्ति आंदोलन के इन विशिष्ट संतों को इस कलाचित्र में एक साथ प्रस्तुत किया गया है। ये चार प्रमुख संत हैं (दाएं से बाएं) संबंदर, अप्पर , सुंदरार और मनकंचरार। इन्हें यहां शिव नटराज और शिवकामी सुंदरी के मंदिर के दर्शन करते दर्शाया गया है।
