WHITE-BREASTED KINGFISHER
Description
Scientific Name: Halcyon smyrnensis
White-breasted kingfishers are the most familiar of our kingfishers. This kingfisher can often be found well away from water where it feeds on a wide range of prey that includes small reptiles, amphibians, crabs, small rodents and even birds. When perched, the White-breasted Kingfisher will often bob its head up and down as it searches for prey. The perch is also used as a "killing post" on which the hapless prey is bashed lifeless.
