Wild Water Buffalo
Description
Bubalus arnee
IUCN status: Endangered
It is a large buffalo which weighs from 600-1200 kg, their horns are heavy and reach a length of 2m. It is mainly found in north east parts of India along with Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand and Cambodia. Around 91% of the global population is found in India. They are found in wet grassland, swamps and densely vegetated river valley habitat.
The reason for reduction in their population is their habitat loss, hunting and interbreeding with feral and domestic water buffaloes. The wild water buffalo is the most likely ancestors of the domestic water buffalo.
