Bombay to Mumbai

Door of the East with its Face to the West

Description

The subject of ‘Bombay’ now referred to as ‘Mumbai’ has been a fascinating one. It is truly a city which is a door to the East with its face to the West. Its hinterland and its splendored culture has not only influenced the nation but enriched the lives of all those who live in it, who pass by it, and those in the future who will visit it. This catalogue complements the exhibition Bombay to Mumbai - Door of the East with its Face to the West, the founding show of the newly established Prints Gallery at the CSMVS, exploring Bombay and its environs, its people and heritage. The prints in the exhibition feature early maps and townscapes done by professional artists, amateur artists, and military men. The Museum has been able to open this new gallery due to the vision and the generosity of two supporters of the Museum, Pauline R. Rohatgi and Dr. Pheroza J. Godrej.
