From Persia to Punjab
Description
This is a fascinating investigation into the discovery and exploration of ancient Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The phrase ‘from Persepolis to the Punjab’ refers to the vast Iranian empire extended eastwards through Afghanistan to the north-western border-lands of the Indian subcontinent. This book brings together the most recent research and expertise drawn from several areas of study, in order to examine the personalities, scripts, empires, dynasties and religions of this complex and multi-faceted region. It further explains why the region became the focus of an intense political interest for the nineteenth-century European powers, known as ‘The Great Game’. The book is divided into three parts. The first, ‘Awakening the Past’, the second part, ‘Constructing the Past’, and the third part, ‘Encountering the Past’, comprises six essays discussing the activities of a variety of nineteenth-century Europeans and the earliest archaeological discoveries, concluding with Sir Aurel Stein in the early twentieth century. This publication was supported by Jamshyd and Pheroza Godrej.
