E. O. Hoppe’s BOMBAY
Description
“Coming back to Bombay was like coming home to London, Berlin or Paris” wrote E.O. Hoppe in 1929 during the visit to the present-day Mumbai. He was England’s most famous photographer of the era. Hoppe captured a body of remarkable images that are the first to show a natural, spontaneous and distinctly modernist view of Indian life. The book has a short biography of Hoppe and essays by Dr. Pratapaditya Pal and Graham Howe followed by Hoppe’s images of the then Bombay. CSMVS presented two exhibitions, Hoppe’s Bombay and Hoppe’s Shantiniketan to observe the 150th birth anniversary year of Rabindranath Tagore. Beginning in 1929, Tagore visited Bombay several times. The Museum in the city of Mumbai was the first venue for both the exhibitions, whereas the Shantiniketan exhibition travelled to Kolkata, Tagore’s city. The publication of this catalogue has been made possible with financial donations from Dr. David Nalin, Mrs. Chitralekha Pal and Dr. and Mrs. Narendra and Rita Parson.
