Humsafar – The Companion

The story of Indian Textile based on the CSMVS Collection

Description

After a hiatus of 15 years, the Trustees of the Museum decided to overcome various conservational issues and bring out the exclusive textile collection of the Museum on display. This dream was finally realised with a grant from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India under the Metro Museum Modernizaton Plan – Phase I. The gallery was inaugurated on 11th May 2015 along with the release of this illustrated guidebook. The book highlights masterpieces of the collection, few historically significant textile pieces along with textiles from the TAPI Collection (collection of Praful and Shilpa Shah) to illustrate this. The gallery and guidebook follow Sant Kabir’s doha ‘jhini jhini bini chadariya’ where he uses the example of the refined and subtle yarn spun on the wheel and woven into a complex interlaced cloth to talk about the thread of life. This beautiful informative guide book will help visitors, more particularly students of textile and design, to understand the rich cultural heritage of textile and the costume tradition of India.
