Description

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is one of the museums in India that has a collection of art objects from East Asia, thanks to the generous bequests of Sir Ratan Tata and Sir Dorabji Tata, sons of the pioneering Parsi industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata (1839-1904). The Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust substantially contributed towards the funding for this publication. This catalogue includes 124 pieces from the Chinese collection of both the Tata brothers comprising of 1,028 objects. The Tata Collection represents what was popular in Europe at the time, exemplifying what European collectors of the early 20th century liked best about Chinese art. The bulk of the collection is made up of Chinese porcelain, followed by jades, lacquer, cloisonne, and snuff bottles. The pieces are decorative, colourful and many of them are of outstanding quality
